waste negotiations

29 Apr

During our time in Old Fadama we have encountered a situation of waste accumulation that is difficult to imagine without seeing it. Korle lagoon’s hydrographical basin overlaps with a large extention of Accra, bringing most of the city’s waste into the lagoon. This process becomes more evident with the intense water runoff during rain season. Old Fadama’s waste is also dumped directly into the lagoon, due to inexistent waste collection in this part of the city. Adding to that, e-waste from overseas is  dumped in the surroundings of Korle Lagoon, where scrap dealers try to recycle and sell part of its components. All of this comes together in one place: Old Fadama and directly influences its inhabitants, their daily life and their businesses.

Can the process of sanitation and waste treatment  become a starting point for Old Fadama’s urban regeneration?
